THE ORTHOPAEDIC ADVISORY BOARD
In 2006 Sealy US formed the Orthopaedic Advisory Board, to continue to build on Sealy's rich orthopaedic heritage. It focuses on developments and innovations that help contribute to orthopaedic health and provide more restful and recuperative sleep.
The Orthopaedic Advisory Board
The Orthopaedic Advisory Board collaborates with Sealy in terms of research, technology and innovation to help:
- Advancements that offer 'orthopedically correct' support and contribute to overall orthopedic health
- Understand the nature of sleep and sleep problems, as well as design products that meet evolving needs
- Direct and oversee academic sleep studies and research
Consisting of eminent orthopaedic surgeons, researchers and clinicians the Board leads Sealy's medical research and development efforts.
Orthopaedically Correct Design
The Orthopaedic Advisory Board developed the concept and defined the measurements and criteria for Orthopedically Correct Design. Here's how it works:
- The more supportive the mattress is, the more pressure points are created
- The more pressure relief the mattress offers, the less support you get
- To eliminate tossing and turning from uncomfortable pressure points, you need the perfect balance of proper back support and targeted pressure relief

Dr Robert G Addison
Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern University. Founder and Senior Consultant of the Centre for Pain Studies. Charter Member and past President of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
Dr William E Garrett Jr (PhD)
Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and team physician for Duke University Medical Centre. President of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Former Chairman of Orthopaedics at University of North Carolina.
Dr Thomas L Smith
Head of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at Wake Forest University. Directs, supervises and coordinates all science studies performed in the laboratory. Leads the 7 year Physician Orthopaedic Residency Program, as well as the implementation of science research protocols.
Dr Gary G Poehling
Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University. Member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Author of numerous articles on orthopaedic surgery and arthroscopy, lecturer.
